Naoto Miura (見浦ナオト, Miura Naoto) is one of the main characters in Clockwork Planet. He is one of the two leaders of Second Upsilon with close relationships with three of the Initial Y Units.

Personality[]

Naoto is obsessed with Clockwork and is often oblivious to his surroundings. He is described as a hardcore machine maniac / nerd / junkie, who would rather spend time tinkering and observing their designs than with humans. This is to such an extent that he himself recognized by the time he entered middle school that he was different. Due to this, he is often bullied at school. He is amused by the depths to which his bullies stooped, remarking he had practically earned an achievement titled, "Complete Set of Bullying".

Naoto prefers automata over humans as unlike humans, the perfection of a well-crafted automaton trumps the imperfections of the living. Furthermore, they do not age. Noting that humans age and lose their beauty, he dismisses any possible interest in girls including Marie as he considered them "flesh-bags". Furthermore, he outright refused her request to help her fix Kyoto's Core Tower, citing that he does not see why he has to save any humans living in Kyoto. He only accepted after RyuZU told him that her younger sister could be found beneath the Tower. This extends to his own life, with him choosing often to protect RyuZU even at personal cost. This is best shown when he unhesitatingly told RyuZU to abandon him and flee during the Kyoto purge and later choosing to drag her scalding body out of light so she could cool down quicker despite it badly burning his hands.

Naoto possesses a calm disposition, being slow to anger. Despite being bullied by his classmates (and at times being scorned, or humiliated), he doesn't seem to mind. Contrary to this, Naoto also possesses a twisted darkness. It reveals itself whenever machines & automata like RyuZU and AnchoR are harmed or mistreated. Although his outward appearance seems calm, inwardly he is going berserk with a startling amount of bloodlust and vengeance flowing through him. This causes his eyes and his smile to become contorted and saying that he is "filled with killing intent" is putting it too lightly. This distorted nature is derived from Naoto's belief on how "people have to pay". He claims that it's not vengeance, but rather that people should face the consequences for what they do. This belief also applies to himself, as he is willing to pay the price himself if he does something wrong. Because of this, Princess Houko states that he could be one's greatest ally but also their greatest enemy. Marie also admitted that, should she have to fight him, she couldn't envision any possibility of winning. Conversely, he would only take certain risks in return for a "reward" proportional to the risk he is taking, although the reward itself is quite subjective to Naoto's own preferences.

The greatest thing about Naoto's personality is his determination to never give up. No matter how bleak the situation is, he refuses to bow before it. His instinct for clockwork is formidable and coupled with this determination he is able to abandon rational thought and come up with irrational and crazy ideas that would not occur to anyone else. During the Kyoto purge after resolving himself to meet AnchoR, he simply decided to march directly into the Core Tower without worrying about any of the behind-the-scenes politics, something Marie believed to be crazy. This side of him is also responsible for enabling him to understand what most people cannot grasp. This is evident in many situations: his solution to fixing RyuZU; his answer to Gennai's question about humanity; his ability to figure out the plans Vermouth discovered on the terrorists; and much more.

Naoto is also revealed through his thoughts and actions to be an enormous pervert, being masochistic when abused by RyuZU and being dominating when it came to TemP. However, he is also chivalrous in this nature, and refused to lay hands on RyuZU despite the lack of such being provoking to her. His explanation was that he treasures his automata to the point where he would feel like he would be sullying them if he did act upon his desires, though this did not impress her.

Appearance[]

Naoto is a boy with pale grey eyes (blue in the manga) and blue hair.

He wears a blue hoodie with a blue shirt inside of it and dark blue pants, all patterned with designs of clockwork. He is almost always wearing a pair of neon-green noise-cancelling headphones.

Abilities & Equipment[]

Superhuman Hearing[]

Naoto's hearing abilities are miles above average and enables him to detect even the smallest of sounds and determine the exact location and number of anything that emits sound within his hearing range. He wears noise dampening headphones that lowers the sound he picks up to that of an ordinary level.

This ability is demonstrated when he precisely located all of the malfunctions in the Kyoto's Core Tower just by listening to its gears, achieving this in a matter of seconds as opposed to the Meister Guild, which had been trying to locate the malfunctions for days on end.

Genius Intellect[]

Naoto is a clockmaker with an intuitive grasp of how clockwork functions. He was able to fix RyuZU in just 3 hours to the surprise of Marie and RyuZU herself, and surpasses the technical knowledge amassed by every single member of the Breguet family that had come into possession of RyuZU.

Marie admitted that with his hearing abilities, he should have been able to become a genius mechanic. Ironically, he was unable to grasp the teachings he learnt from his textbooks or lessons. At first, it was believed that he simply couldn't match what his ears and intuition told him. However, Marie discovered that the lessons he was learning were incorrect, and thus Naoto's answers came into conflict with them.

Upon this discovery and realization, Naoto abandoned what he studied and relied only on his hearing and his instincts. As a result he was able to work with god-like abilities and speed. This suggests that Naoto's clockmaking skills is simply natural talent.

Weaknesses[]

Naoto's hearing is so enhanced that it is necessary for him to wear his noise-cancelling headphones, just to reduce the noise enough for him to be comfortable with. If he doesn't wear them for a certain period of time, the overwhelming amount and intensity of noises would cause him to develop a severe headache, much like a migraine.

Being a regular teenager who hadn't undergone any physical training, he is easily tired out.

Naoto is also only human, making snipers and assassins who are able to slip under his guard a threat. This is exploited by Halter to hold him hostage, keeping RyuZU and AnchoR at bay.

Character History[]

Very little is known about Naoto before he met RyuZU. What is known is that he attended a high school, lived alone in a low-class apartment and had a hobby and skills pertaining to automata. He had been known to be eccentric and declined at least one confession from a popular senior. Since his parents are never seen in the series, it is believed that they are deceased (with it being stated directly in the manga that both of his parents are deceased. This possibly contributed to his initial dislike of humans and his love for automata.

Prior to the story began, he lived on the seventh floor of an apartment at 35° N, 135° E, on Floor 1 of the Underground in Kyoto Grid. The district he lived in was surrounded by a World Heritage Site still bearing wooden buildings.

Japan Arc[]

One Month Before[]

Naoto is first introduced not paying attention to class, choosing to tinker with some clockwork or machinery. This unsurprisingly, results in bad grades. While walking home, he finds a garbage dump. He decides to rummage through it in order to find any parts that he could use to build automata. As soon as he reaches his apartment, he goes straight to his makeshift workshop to continue building the automata he had been working on for two years. However, before he begins, he takes a bath whilst reading his favourite magazine about automata.

Suddenly, much to his surprise, he can hear the sound of a falling object. It's only a few seconds later when he realizes that the falling object is falling directly onto his apartment, to which he begins to panic.

After the falling object crashes into his apartment and obliterates the roof. Believing it to be a meteor at first, he finds, to his dismay, that it had reduced the living room to dust. He then discovers the object was a container bearing an inactive automaton. Due to her sheer beauty, Naoto faints.

When he comes to, he decides to open the YD-01 container, learning the automaton's name is RyuZU. Noticing RyuZU is broken he decides to fix her despite knowing that the building could crumble any moment. Due to the risk of dust contamination and the impossibility of moving his tools outside, Naoto chooses to repair RyuZU in place. After three hours he is able to fix and rewind her and is saved in return as the building collapses. RyuZU then greets him, addressing him as her master after a short tirade against humanity's shortcomings. Overwhelmed by the brush with death and in awe of her specs, Naoto faints again.

He is awoken by the sound of the Core Tower. Without his noise-cancelling headphones, he can very clearly pinpoint the source of the cacophony: gears on the twenty-fourth floor 70,620 meters underground had ground themselves into a mess. Gathering himself, he realizes that RyuZU had stayed the night beside him. The memories come back to him all at once, and he quietly asks RyuZU what had become of his apartment. He is told the building collapsed, though RyuZU had retrieved quite a few important belongings before then, including his headphones. Placing them back on, he finds himself beholding the ancient yet impossibly advanced automaton. A dilemma sits before him and Naoto is uncertain whether he is worthy of becoming RyuZU's master. Upon seeing her downcast at the thought of being rejected, his reason is overwhelmed, and he immediately begs her to let him be her master. She then seizes his hand, sensually sucking upon and licking his fingers, completing the registration.

Having little to no sleep and no food, Naoto finds himself forced by RyuZU to run to school. Along the way, their conversation turns from RyuZU's merciless attitude to the requirements of living. Naoto bemoans his lack of funds or lodging, upon which RyuZU simply tells him not to worry about it as she will handle it in his stead. He inadvertently reveals he fully repaired her in around three hours. RyuZU is shocked, and quickly asks him extremely detailed questions concerning her specifications. He is able to answer perfectly, and further shocks her when he explains that he can simply listen to machines in order to get clear and concise knowledge about them. He compliments her body and is called a pervert in response. The talk continues when RyuZU is told that Naoto is looked down upon by other students in society. Naoto briefly explains to her how reputation and social standings were, leaving her to mull it over as he heads into class. There, exhausted, he falls asleep again.

He is awakened by RyuZU's appearance, as she had transferred into the school while he slept. She quickly takes her place beside him and spends the day flirting with him, having incorrectly determined that simply having her around would raise his status. As a result, Naoto had to withstand gazes of jealousy, hatred, disgust, and enmity. He quietly explains to her that her desired effect was not taking place. RyuZU is miffed that the other students are not immediately considering him more popular and as such continues to perform public displays of affection.

Due to being a transfer student and an incredible beauty, RyuZU is later greeted by many students, all whom were struck down harshly by her devastating words. Naoto remains by her side the entire day, and as such becomes absolutely exhausted. Upon being prompted by RyuZU, he reminds her that it's her fault, though she does not care. They then discuss how RyuZU transferred into the school and how she intended to handle their finances. Naoto is told that she simply threatened to reveal the principal wore a wig and implied that the secret ingredient to financial success is crime. He prompts her for lodging, and she replies by telling him the name of a love hotel. Declining it immediately despite RyuZU claiming it was the cheapest place to stay, he recommends instead that they stay at a manga cafe.

They are accosted by a few college punks who try to force RyuZU to go with them. Naoto tries to simply leave with RyuZU, but the punks block their path. When they reach out for RyuZU however, he slaps them away and proclaims them to be human garbage while preparing for a fight. RyuZU, seeing her master defend her so fervently, uses her scythes to destroy the punks' clothing and send them running. Naoto hears the sound of the police and immediately takes her into the manga cafe, where they reserve a couples seat at box number four. He declines to have her take a shower with him, despite wanting it badly.

Upon his return, he notices the mountain of reading material RyuZU collected. She asserts that it's for understanding the modern world, and after a few questions concerning rest, Naoto decides he needs some. RyuZU then prompts him about her lap pillow, something he was hesitant about accepting. After she points out that he had already partaken of the luxury during the day, he zips over and rests his head, falling asleep immediately. Consequently, he was not awake for RyuZU's musings about whether he saw her as an item or a person.

The next morning RyuZU drags him around to a beauty salon, following such by taking him shopping. At noon, he protests his treatment, commenting that he could simply wear Shimumara or Uniloq clothing instead. RyuZU however, notes that it wouldn't work as he did not possess such flair or face. She proceeds to lecture him about how clothing choice reflected not only looks and taste, but also the person's financial standing. Capping it off with a succinct summary of how she knows, she proceeds to reveal that she had accumulated a vast sum of wealth while he slept, hiding the methods she used and greatly unsettling Naoto.

After lunch Naoto decides to take RyuZU shopping. Despite RyuZU's questions, Naoto has her change into a camisole. This choice leads to the both Naoto and the clerk becoming awestruck due to how well it suited RyuZU. The former and the latter briefly quibble about semantics - RyuZU still seeing herself as an object while Naoto claimed that she was a cute girl. Nonetheless, Naoto then trips and falls onto RyuZU, with the latter incorrectly assuming that the entire trip was an elaborate trap due to lust. Naoto is then invited by RyuZU to give into his desires. This results in him opening her maintenance hatch up with a screwdriver and tuning her up, causing the store owner to mistake it for public lovemaking and kicking them out.

As evening arrives, Naoto is taken to the Central Hotel by RyuZU, where the two coincidentally encounter Vainney Halter and Marie Bell Breguet. The four make their way to the Hotel's restaurants, a rough introduction ensues, with Naoto learning that it was Marie's transportation that had destroyed his apartment. He chews her out while also thanking her for RyuZU at the same time, much to the disbelief of Marie, who demands he return RyuZU. Naoto refuses, prompting Marie to tell Halter to kill him. This demand is thwarted by RyuZU, who threatens Marie with her scythes. Halter is able to deescalate the situation, finally breaking the news that the Army and Meister Guild have abandoned the entire grid, choosing to allow 20,000,000 civilians to perish in a purge. Marie theorizes that RyuZU is able to solve their problems, though the latter flatly denies this, explaining instead that Naoto is able to provide a solution. With the group's attention on him Naoto tries to deny such shortly before the entire grid is hit by a gravitational malfunction.

Tokyo Tower Falls[]

Naoto, buoyed by his desires to meet AnchoR, joins Vainney Halter and Marie Bell Breguet along with RyuZU. He acts as the "face" of the group, putting on a show for the Akihabara Grid. He announces that he will be reducing the Grid's temperature to 150 degrees over 72 hours, before destroying Tokyo Tower as a display of power.

Cutting the broadcast shortly, he meets up with Halter before they are accosted by a trio of helicopters. RyuZU then makes her appearance, destroying the attackers swiftly. Marie soon arrived and the four make their retreat, evading the police.

Relationships[]

Naoto Miura's Unnamed Automaton[]

Naoto treasured the inactive automaton very much, spending his days toiling away and attempting to activate her. Upon her destruction Naoto was heartbroken, though he accepted she was irreparable and instead, transferred her surviving parts into repairing RyuZU. As such, any affections he held for the automaton carried over to the first unit of the Initial Y Series

RyuZU[]

RyuZU is Naoto's "slave" as he is registered as her master. He often will prioritize what is best for RyuZU over himself. In turn, RyuZU is very defensive of him, and doesn't hesitate on eliminating any threats to his well-being. This extends to herself, and she punishes herself when she realizes Naoto was burned while working on her behalf. Naoto loves RyuZU and even goes so far as to propose to her, to which she accepts happily.

Marie Bell Breguet[]

Naoto at first, almost irrationally dislikes Marie, calling her a fleshbag. He also enjoys disagreeing with her, much to her annoyance. However, after the events in Kyoto, he begins to respect her for her ability as a clockmaker, although he doesn't show it very often as he sees her as a rival of sorts.

Marie, in turn, respects Naoto and recognizes his abilities and potential. She is deeply envious of his hearing and ability to intuitively learn about their planet, often worrying about not matching up despite being another prodigy. This feeling of inferiority and Naoto's own refusal to treat her well leads to her calling him an "idiot".

Vainney Halter[]

Halter understands what must be done or said in order to motivate Naoto to do anything, often manipulating the boy for the greater good. However, when things come down to the wire Halter always has a plan to keep Naoto and Marie safe.

AnchoR[]

AnchoR is Naoto's adoptive daughter. Naoto cares a lot for AnchoR and wishes to protect her. Their relationship is parent and child. Naoto, unlike most, sees AnchoR as more than just a tool for destruction, telling her as much. For setting her on a path of happiness, AnchoR loves and respects Naoto very much, always calling him "Father".

Naoto's love is so great that when AnchoR intended to perform a suicidal attack to rescue him, he ordered her and RyuZU to stand down, knowing that she would be irrevocably broken if she did so.

TemP[]

Unlike with RyuZU and AnchoR, Naoto's relationship with the third unit of the Initial-Y is assertive. He constantly showers lavish praise upon her while declaring that he was destined to be her master, a fact that greatly irritates RyuZU. TemP on the other hand, was initially quite dismissive of Naoto. His relentless advances do prompt her to eventually change her mind slightly, enough to steal his first kiss (though not without embarrassment). Currently their relationship is that of a lovesick admirer and a blushing tsundere.

Ω[]

Naoto hates and despises the man for his actions behind the scenes. His death threats against the members of Second Upsilon and the Initial Y-Series have done nothing to endear him to the group. In turn, Ω finds them fascinating, having implied that he was the one who caused both RyuZU and AnchoR to come into his rivals' possession. He embodies the corrupt and rotten state of the world that Naoto and Marie are attempting to overthrow and expose to the public, and as such are their number one enemy.

Trivia[]

  • Shimumara and Uniloq, mentioned during Naoto's shopping phase with RyuZU, are parodies of Shimamura and Uniqlo clothing brands respectively.

Quotes []

  • (To Marie) "As much it disgusts me to say it to your face, you're a genius, Marie. All this time it's been your talent that's made my random power into something useful." -Episode 11
