Marie Bell Breguet (マリー·ベル·ブレゲ, Marī Beru Burege) (later known as Maribel Halter) is one of the main characters of Clockwork Planet. She is the younger daughter of the president of Breguet company.

Personality[]

Marie is a mature young girl for her age who takes things very seriously, especially in her work.

Due to her genius intellect, many others believe her to be the smartest clockmaker in history, and would shoot down anyone who interrupts her. Despite this gap in skill, she is a capable team player and works well with the rest of the Meister Guild, choosing to camp out alongside them rather than stay in luxurious hotels. Together, they're able to effectively fix many problems faced. Furthermore, she doesn't care about her high status and easily threw away her Meister title in order to fake her death. Similar to her fellow genius Naoto, she takes pride in her work and would sometimes argue with those who criticize it.

Although she didn't believe in any gods named by humans, she recognized that during crucial situations prior to the Kyoto Purge she had been given revelations. In such, she acknowledges that there was indeed an existence beyond that of humans.

She is a person with a very strong moral sense as shown when she wouldn't leave Kyoto and promised to fix its Core Tower in order to save millions of lives. She is not a hypocrite, as after bashing the Army for abandoning a hopeless situation, instead of running and weeping she chose to continue attempting repairs instead of accepting it as a reasonable loss.

In spite of her impressive pedigree and her own prodigious skill, Marie is still a child, and needs the support of Halter and the other members of Second Upsilon. She is rather brash, though considers herself to be a lot more forgiving compared to her sister, noting that her sister would execute people in cold blood while she herself could not do it. When Naoto seemingly perished, Marie underwent a lot of distress, culminating in stress vomiting. Halter often needs to remind her that she can let herself relax and enjoy life as a kid does.

She prefers to eat junk food and candies, especially chocolate, despite her having access to other delicious foods and services. This is because she expends much energy while working and needs an easy method to replenish it. Apart from such, she also has a longing for absinthe from Paris.

Appearance[]

Marie is a French girl from Europe. She has emerald green eyes, thin pink lips and long blond hair which is tied into two bunches with red ribbons.

She is often seen dressed in a deep-blue collar shirt with a pink tie, short denim shorts and a beige summer overcoat with blue patterns and linings.

Abilities[]

She is a first class clockmaker, becoming the youngest to attain the title of Meister. As a member of the Breguet family, she had their products and all of their usages, strengths and weaknesses drilled into her at an extremely young age. She enrolled at age 13 and graduated from several famous universities with a Doctorate before turning 17. Her numerous jobs previously has also given her practical experience, and she is able to sense miniscule changes to the planet such as a gravitational fluctuation less than 0.1 in magnitude. However, she was unable to fix RyuZU.

Her abilities are later determined to be far beyond a simple genius as she is able to take what she has learned and build on them to arrive at the answers found by Y a century before. This ability is only matched by the other genius of Second Upsilon, Naoto Miura, with the distinction that Naoto can hear the answers from the start and work backwards to find the steps to the conclusion.

Aside from being a clockmaker, Marie is a skilled gymnast and martial artist.

Plot[]

Japan Arc[]

One Month Before[]

Marie is first seen shouting at her movers as they had accidentally lost the YD-01 container containing RyuZU. They are approached by members of the Army, who offer assistance. Brushing them off, Marie calls them amateurs and tells them to stay out of the way of the Meisters.

Halter reunites with Marie with a car, where she unwinds and shows her true personality, that of a cheeky teenage girl. She listens to his counsel against making enemies whilst consuming sweets. The two discuss the circumstances, where Kyoto's Core Tower malfunctioned causing gravity to become 1% stronger than usual. Furthermore, they had then been summoned from Canada and had to make their way there with haste. Halter concluded that it had been more of a political issue rather than one of urgency, to which Marie complained that politics were everywhere.

They join the others of the repair crew shortly, taking some time to rest. She is awoken at 3:18:24 AM by the sensation of gravity fluctuating. Instantly alert, she calls for Halter who assembles an observation crew after chiding her to get dressed. The team arrives shortly with the data and Hannes begins explaining, only for Marie to interject accurately with her observation of the gravitational anomaly and why the mechanized Halter hadn't been able to detect it. Quickly adding that the gravity shift and the troubles behind it had significant impact on the grid as a whole, Marie rallies the Meisters and vows to fix the problem.

After sending off the observation team she collects some cocoa and discusses adulthood and putting on facades with Halter. She grumbles about how the Meisters got fooled by her rousing speech, to which Halter remarks that it's very likely that they let themselves be fooled; Meisters couldn't cower when a young girl tells them to stand and fight. The talk turns to the Army. Marie suspects something is not right since they hadn't interfered with their work. She assigns Halter to investigate. They speculate that there is something hidden, with Marie deducing that the regional authority is very likely hiding a fatal malfunction. The two are interrupted by a staff member who informs them the fallen YD-01 container was found. To Marie's great dismay, it had fallen into the crevasses beneath the city. Halter goes with the staff member to contact headquarters and Marie sarcastically comments that the job is going to be a fun one.

The work continues smoothly with the Meister Guild managing to confirm the first two floors within 26 hours. However, due to the extreme lack of interference by the Army, Marie's suspicions are heightened and she makes her way to the elevator, ostensibly to speak to the members of the Army. This draws the attention of an auditor from the Technical Force. Making light conversation with the man, she subdues him and is joined by Halter at the first floor. Threatening the man with a mercury injection fails, though Halter is able to pinpoint the man's family and threatens him into cooperation. After interrogating Ryouji Niijima, they learn that Kyoto will be purged. Returning to the floor, Marie assembles the team and sends them to the 24th floor. Service Chief Conrad is astonished by her information and inquires about such, becoming slightly disapproving when he learns she used some rash methods to obtain such. The Meisters, upon learning the truth of the matter begin to despair, but Marie pushes them to continue looking for the problem's source. This also has the side effect of forcing the Army to pull out completely. After the 2nd floor is emptied of people, Marie nearly breaks down at the monumental task given to them. However, she chooses to forge onwards, intending to work on to the bitter end and hoping that something would help out.

After days of work, they're still unable to locate the true cause of the malfunction. During the fifth meeting, Hannes points out the problem is that the irregularity is caused by a veritable "Butterfly Effect", where the gears causing the issues can be located in a completely different area. Analytics Chief Massimo then provides 563,499,352 possible patterns of malfunction along with a generous estimated time to completion. Marie makes a request to the communications chief to delay the purge but is told it is unlikely to happen. Conrad then informs the gathered Meisters that he had selected around 35,034 of the more likely patterns according to his intuition, however, he has little faith in it working out. The Head of Transport, having finally become frightened by the incoming purge, asks about whether they should prepare escape plans for themselves and the population. Hannes grows furious at the thought of abandoning the people, and Marie points out they don't have the authority. To make matters worse, Conrad deduces the Army has chosen to not only kill the 20,000,000 inhabitants, but also knowingly sabotage any attempt to save them. To make matters worse, Halter comes bearing orders to retreat by Meister Guild Headquarters. Marie is furious, taking Halter with her to confront them about the order.

They meet a man named Limons, with Marie demanding the reason for the retreat order. Limons nonchalantly informs her that due to the problem being unsolvable and that they are unable to stop the Army, Meister Guild Headquarters has decided that it is in their best interests to leave. He then explains coolly that the Guild cannot risk the Army being exposed and having the regional authority collapse as it would mean the Guild would be overburdened due to lacking manpower. Despite Marie's horrified objections to these justifications, Limons is completely set on purging the Kyoto grid. Marie, at her wits end, chooses to head to the Core Tower and continue repairs. Limons, having foreseen this, immediately strips her of her authority as a Meister, barring her from the Core Tower. She then recollects that he had been a dependent of the Vacheron Family, and deduces that he is doing this on their behalf to frame Marie. Halter intervenes before she can lash out, taking her away from the room, where she breaks down at him on the elevator ride down.

After leaving his office Marie, still thinking of any ways to solve the problem, reworks the problem and recognizes that the key was finding the locations of the errors. While ruminating on how to get back into the core tower, they coincidentally cross paths with RyuZU and Naoto Miura. Marie almost immediately recognizes RyuZU as the Initial-Y Series Unit that had been accidentally lost while being transported.

Marie attempts to negotiate with Naoto to return RyuZU to her, as she is the apparent owner of the automata. Naoto immediately refuses in a childish manner, annoying Marie. When she begins to threaten and badmouth Naoto, she doesn't realise RyuZU's scythes making their way towards her, intending to kill her. Halter is the only one who notices, and instinctively points his gun at Naoto.

Marie is unable to move, and Halter decides to calm the atmosphere by putting his gun away. After he quickly lectures Marie about her attitude, Marie begins to try and convince Naoto to help them fix the Core Tower, knowing that his hearing abilities would be able to detect the among the millions of gears in the tower, but Naoto once again turns them down, much to their dismay. However, when RyuZU informs Naoto that her "little sister" AnchoR - another Initial-Y Series Unit - is located in Kyoto's Core Tower, he then decides to go to the Core Tower to look for her, with helping the Meister Guild as a side-quest.

Tokyo Tower Falls[]

While Naoto and Halter put on a show for Akihabara's citizens, Marie is behind the scenes, manipulating the gears to destroy Tokyo Tower in accordance with Naoto's plans. RyuZU remains with her while this happens, though due to law enforcement helicopters arriving earlier than anticipated, Marie is left behind. Surrounded by military automata, Marie destroys them all, before reuniting with the group and angrily accusing RyuZU of leaving her to die. The group then heads for the Core Tower.

They soon rush to Core Tower in order to fix it before the purge begins, but Limons is insistent on purging the Kyoto Grid, and sends numerous automata to attack them. However, those automata are easily destroyed by RyuZU and Halter. In the midst of confusion, Marie and Halter agree to trick Limons into believing that she was killed, and smashes Marie's Chrono Compass, shattering it into pieces.

Not long afterwards, they arrive at the Core Tower.

Relationships[]

Breguet Family[]

Marie holds her family in high regard. In particular, she knew that they would have parts for repairing AnchoR, showing in-depth knowledge of her family's abilities. She also makes reference to her elder sister, commenting that while she herself was merciful, her sister was unforgiving and would punish those who slighted her.

Vainney Halter[]

Vainney Halter is tasked as Marie's bodyguard and is usually seen with her throughout the series. Despite the work-like premise, the two are very close to each other and Halter is often seen taking care of her and making sure she doesn't create any problems due to her badmouthing habit and easily-angered personality.

She is often referred to by him as "Princess" (Hime-san).

Hannes[]

Marie treats him as a core member of the repair team and trusts in his skills. Hannes in turn, respects Marie and calls her "sensei."

Conrad[]

Marie treats him as a font of advice on the repair team and trusts in his skills. Conrad on the other hand, sees her as a brilliant youngster needing nurturing and guidance.

Massimo[]

Marie sees him as a vital member of the repair team, accepting his estimations without question. He respects her for her skill, never showing resentment.

Limons Vacheron[]

They hate each other. Marie despises Limons for trying to kill 20,000,000 for the sole purpose of crushing her reputation and the reputations of the Meister Guild. Limons sees her as a stupid child who stands as an obstacle in the way of his patron company Vacheron.

Naoto Miura[]

Though she did not trust Naoto at first, she began to open up to him as a friend. Also, in the manga, it is implied in some points in the series that she has romantic feelings for him, such as her wondering what this 'feeling grating at my chest' is. Another example of this is when she falls into a brief period of depression when she believed him to be dead. Also, RyuZU says in the manga that there is a "chance" for the two.

She often finds herself exasperated by his pervert tendencies, delivering physical damage in return for either speaking of such or embarrassing Marie.

RyuZU[]

She sees RyuZU as nothing more than a machine but after a life-threatening situation, she is genuinely afraid of her and would occasionally shift the blame towards Naoto, even though it was clearly RyuZU's fault. Though she is afraid of RyuZU, she is not traumatized and has a more respected relationship with the automaton.

AnchoR[]

At first, she only saw AnchoR as a weapon of mass destruction and feared her. However, later on, she no longer fears her and comes to care her instead.

Trivia[]

  • Marie Bell Breguet is Himana Tsubaki's version of a genius person, while Naoto is Yuu Kamiya's.
  • Breguet is named after one of the oldest watch company brands and its family founder, Abraham-Louis Breguet, who invented the first tourbillion watch.
  • Marie's green eyes may be a reference to the Shakespearean rooted term for jealousy, "green-eyed monster". She shows deep envy of Naoto, who envies her talents in turn.
