Clockwork Planet (Earth)

This article is about the location in the series formerly known as Earth. For other uses of the term, see Clockwork Planet.

Clockwork Planet (時計仕掛けの惑星, Tokei shikake no wakusei) is the planet where the story of Clockwork Planet takes place.

Appearance[]

The Clockwork Planet is a planet composed of a seemingly infinite number of gears. It is said to have more gears than there are stars in the sky, putting the total amount at a number greater than 200 sextillion (200,000,000,000,000,000,000,000). Gigantic gears appear to be carrying smaller gears, indicative of cities and regions. An equator still exists, dividing the planet into hemispheres. Orbiting the equator is a ring known as the "Equatorial Coil / Spring" with a diameter several miles larger than the planet itself. From space, the planet appears to be a dull yellow color.

Apart from the general shape of the planet, very little remains of what was once planet Earth. The oceans have dried up and the landmasses down to its core have been excavated for the construction of the hollow sphere.

Overview[]

Clockwork Planet is Earth, having died and been rebuilt by the genius clockmaker Y 30 years after it had perished. Because the planet itself has been destroyed, humans constructed cities on top of the gears and built Core Towers to control the temperature and weather. Clockwork Planet consists of more than 6 million areas supported by 30000 Core Towers, Clock Towers, and Metro Areas. Metro Areas are illuminated by Light Gears at night. At least a few areas consist of a replicated ocean, as Second Upsilon is seen facing off against a navy upon the waters. The interior of the planet was used to create the massive gears, leading to the insides of the Clockwork Planet being hollow and akin to the vacuum of space. Any being entering this void would be crushed by the pressure if they didn't suffocate first. The remnants of purged grids lie at varying levels below the main "surface" of the planet, allowing relatively "safe" passage around the depths should an unfortunate soul fall onto one.

Transportation on the planet come in a few forms: The Cylinder Train, which specializes in land-based scheduled transportation between rotating cities; air transport, in the form of planes; and boats, making up the last of the trio in land, sea, and air.

Since everything is controlled by gears, someone who can understand and manipulate the structure possesses powers equivalent to a god. Due to the sheer scale of the planet however, apart from the members of Second Upsilon and Y himself, none have been able to achieve this feat in the 1000 years it has existed. The size of the planet also allows for "The Butterfly Effect" to take place - malfunctions can occur where the affected gears are located in a completely different region from the cause.

As it is constructed from the remnants of the Earth, Clockwork Planet possesses its natural satellite, the Moon. The Equatorial Coil draws power from the orbit of the moon, with this energy serving to power the entire world of clockwork gears.

The Calendar used is the Gregorian Calendar with the major difference being the reference epoch having changed to the year the Earth perished. The events of Clockwork Planet take place around year 1013 of the Wheel.

History[]

Roughly 1000 years ago, the Earth began dying, having exhausted its supply of energy. Its population was divided into those who chose to leave and those who chose to stay. The former embarked on starships and set off for regions unknown. The latter remained and resigned itself to its fate.

Y, a clockmaker at the time, remade the entire planet out of gears.

During the Clockwork Planet's existence, the Meister Guild was founded to keep things running. Given the planet was still an incredibly intricate, mechanical timepiece, it needs regular maintenance, or it would eventually break and cease its function.
